This year’s stage and arena layout are designed to be experienced from all directions, even from angles that were previously part of the backstage area. The audience thus becomes a natural part of the TV broadcast as well, contributing to a stronger live feeling that brings the competition closer to both those in the arena and viewers at home.

One of the new features is the long catwalk that connects the main stage with the audience stage. It creates opportunities for artists to move straight out among the spectators and also becomes a powerful walk for the artists who make it all the way to the final.

“The new stage opens up completely new possibilities for the show. When the audience and stage are integrated in this way, a stronger sense of excitement is created, enhancing the competitive atmosphere for both the live audience and TV viewers,” says Anders Wistbacka, project manager for Melodifestivalen.

Fredrik Stormby has over 25 years of experience in lighting, video, and stage design for major live and TV productions. He has previously worked with Melodifestivalen and several Eurovision Song Contests, most recently as lighting designer for Eurovision 2024 in Malmö.

“Over the years, Melodifestivalen has delivered a number of spectacular stages, but we dare to promise that this year’s design offers completely new experiences and leaves a strong impression—of course while keeping the familiar Melodifestivalen vibe intact,” says Fredrik Stormby, production designer for Melodifestivalen 2026.

Even though much is new, Melodifestivalen retains many of its familiar building blocks, such as generous LED surfaces with integrated lighting, a large LED floor, and a flexible lighting rig that can be adapted to each entry. There is also plenty of room for classic Mello effects such as heavy smoke, fire, and pyrotechnics.

As in previous years, the green room is located behind the main cameras to maximize audience interaction. New this year is that the lighting and video control area has been moved to another part of the arena, allowing for more audience seating and a cleaner TV image without technical equipment in the foreground.
