TVR Board Approves Romania’s Participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2027

The 2027 edition will mark Romania’s 25th participation in the Eurovision Song Contest.

The Board of Directors of the Romanian Public Television (TVR) has approved Romania’s participation in the 71st Eurovision Song Contest, with 11 votes in favor and one abstention. The decision was made during the Board meeting on July 22, 2026, and is subject to the budget allocated to the project through TVR’s 2027 Revenue and Expenditure Budget.

TVR’s decision comes in the wake of Romania’s outstanding success at the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest, where Alexandra Căpitănescu, Romania’s representative, achieved one of the country’s best results in Eurovision history by finishing 3rd in the Grand Final. Her song, “Choke Me,” received 296 points.

The 2026 National Selection also attracted 101 submitted entries, confirming the strong interest of the Romanian music industry in the Eurovision project.

Furthermore, Eurovision 2026 generated unprecedented media attention in Romania. According to mediaTRUS analysis, from the beginning of the year until the day of the Grand Final, Eurovision accumulated 21,565 mentions across the Romanian media landscape.

Approving Romania’s participation at this early stage makes it possible to establish a predictable timeline for organizing the project, attract a larger number of composers, lyricists, producers, and performers, organize a highly competitive National Selection, and prepare Romania’s representative under the best possible conditions.

The Eurovision Song Contest is the world’s largest music competition organized under the auspices of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the largest alliance of public service broadcasters in Europe. Established in 1956, the contest is broadcast annually around the world and is watched by more than 160 million viewers across Europe, Australia, Asia, and the Americas. The next edition of the competition will take place in May 2027 in Bulgaria.

For TVR, participation in Eurovision represents a strategic project aimed at promoting Romanian music, supporting emerging artists, and strengthening Romania’s image on the international stage.
