Romania is officially returning to the Eurovision Song Contest, after several years away from the international music competition. According to Paginademedia.ro and TVR sources, the Board of Directors of the Romanian public broadcaster TVR voted today in favor of the country’s comeback to Eurovision.

Romania has been part of the Eurovision Song Contest since 1994, delivering memorable performances over the years. The country’s best results came in 2005, when Luminița Anghel and Sistem took third place in Kyiv with “Let Me Try”, and again in 2010, when Paula Seling and Ovi earned another third place in Oslo with “Playing with Fire.”

In 2006, Mihai Trăistariu achieved fourth place with the song “Tornerò,” one of Romania’s most iconic Eurovision entries, which remains popular among fans to this day.

However, Romania’s recent Eurovision history has been marked by mixed results. While acts like Ilinca & Alex Florea (“Yodel It!”, 2017) reached the final and finished 7th, later entries struggled to replicate that success. Between 2018 – 2021 & 2023, Romania failed to qualify for the final four times, leading to increasing public criticism of TVR’s selection process and spending — especially the €400,000 cost of the 2023 participation.

WRS broke Romania’s bad luck in 2022!

A Promising Return

TVR President Dan Cristian Turturică recently hinted that Romania’s return to Eurovision would only happen once the broadcaster had “reset its relationship with the producers,” noting that external production companies had been benefiting more than TVR itself from the contest.

With the latest decision by the Board of Directors, it seems that this reset has finally begun. Romania’s return is expected to reignite interest among local artists and fans eager to see the country shine again on Europe’s biggest musical stage.

Whether this comeback will mark a new era of success or simply another experiment in rebuilding national confidence remains to be seen — but one thing is clear:

🇷🇴 Romania is back at Eurovision✨🎶
