Following the announcement that Burgas will host the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, the Bulgarian National Television (BNT) has confirmed that groundwork and preparations have already begun at the Arena Burgas site.

During the first official press conference since the August 13 host city reveal, officials focused on the immediate work commencing around the arena. Currently, crews are leveling the adjacent terrain to accommodate the extensive television production equipment required to broadcast the three live shows in May 2027.

Site Inspection and Broadcasting Logistics

BNT General Director Milena Milotinova recently toured Arena Burgas—inspecting the main hall, press center locations, and surrounding areas—alongside the Burgas municipality team.

“I am extremely pleased with what I see,” Milotinova commented on the progress. “Outside, machines are already working on leveling the terrain where part of the equipment will be stationed. This includes eight mobile television stations, which BNT, as the host broadcaster and producer of the show, will have to rent.”

She emphasized that renting this equipment is a necessity, as no single public television network currently possesses a technical package large enough to independently host a production of Eurovision’s scale.

Accelerated Timelines and Technical Capacity

Dimitar Nikolov, Mayor of Burgas Municipality, expressed satisfaction with the pace of the preparations, noting that work has started ahead of schedule:

“In the tender proposal, we described that the renovation work on the adjacent terrain would begin in early September. In order to save ourselves enough time, we started last week; this will give us more freedom to react in a timely manner.”

The press conference also put to rest rumors regarding Arena Burgas’ structural ability to support the heavy rigging—estimated at 150 tons—required for the Eurovision stage. Architect Ivaylo Petkov, the designer of the arena’s main hall, clarified the building’s technical specifications: “According to the documents, the hall is designed for 60 kilograms per square meter. Considering 5,400 square meters, the roof’s load-bearing capacity is about 300 tons.”

Next Steps: Stage Design and a Global Showcase

With structural and groundwork underway, Milotinova outlined the next major creative milestone: the stage design.

“The stage design is the most important thing to start with, as the entire concept for the show will be built around it,” she explained. “Once the stage design is complete, we will be able to determine the allocation of seated versus standing capacity.”

Mayor Nikolov concluded by highlighting the significance of the event for Bulgaria’s international image, revealing his intense dedication to the project:

“I am fighting for the success to be phenomenal, and I will put a lot of energy into this. I know my team’s capabilities in detail, and I will squeeze them like lemons—I’m sorry, I have already canceled the team’s vacations. Let Eurovision be a unifying topic to show the world that Bulgarians are united, creative, and smiling. We want those who have never heard of or visited Bulgaria to say, ‘We want to return to this country again.'”
