Here is a little recap of everything that happened in the Eurovision bubble last week!

Germany

“Das deutsche Finale 2024” occurred on February 16th featuring nine contestants vying for the top spot. Similar to the Eurovision Song Contest final, the winner was determined through a combined voting system, comprising votes from both an international jury and a televote. Each voting method assigned points to the entries on a scale of 1–6, 8, 10, and 12. The international jury consisted of panels from eight different countries: Austria, Croatia, Iceland, Lithuania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

The Etapa națională 2024 final occurred on February 17, 2024, featuring 11 competing songs. The winner was chosen through a 50/50 system of public votes and an expert jury. Alongside the competing entries, the Romanian band Holograf performed as special guests.

Here are the official results of “Etapa Nationala 2024”. The jury was composed by Elena Stegari, Liviu Stirbu, Paul Gamurari, Andrei Zapsa and Aliona Moon.

After the Etapa naÈ›ională final, Valeria Pasha, the runner-up who secured the public vote but lost to Barbu in the jury tiebreak, promptly declared that she had lodged an appeal to ensure “transparency” regarding the results. The official regulations of Etapa naÈ›ională failed to specify whether a potential tie for the top position would lean towards the public or the jury, merely indicating that the victorious entry would be determined by “the song receiving the most points.”

In a live show right after the National Final, Natalia accused indirectly Valeria by buying her votes via sim cards saying that in the last couple of years other participants “tended” to do that. On the other side, Valeria’s team showed their dissatisfaction towards the way TRM decided the winner, claiming that it’s “unfair” that the televote did not have the last word.

On Valeria’s instagram you can find out more about the controversy regarding the voting and the legal actions she took: https://www.instagram.com/p/C3d0ZAdta7t/.

The international jury comprised William Lee Adams (founder of Wiwibloggs), Ole Tøpholm (DR Eurovision commentator), Anna Sahlene (Swedish singer and Estonia’s 2002 representative), Julian Gutierrez, Andrew Rogers, Annely Peebo (co-host of the 2002 Eurovision), Henkka Remes, Liam Clark, and Þórunn Lárusdóttir. Guest performances during the show included Alika (Estonia’s Eurovision representative in 2023) featuring Bedwetters, HND, Gameboy Tetris, Eleryn Tiit, Muteko Taiko, Dance Republic Tantsukool, and Arop.

Sweden

Melodifestivalen 2024 has reached its 3rd heat where 6 acts competed for two spots in the final and two spots for the run-off vote at the end of the fifth heat.

After the first round Jacqline was announced as the first qualifier as she received most votes from all of the contestants.

The results of the 2nd round of voting were the following:

Qualified to the final:
Jacqline – “Effortless”
Cazzi Opeia – “Give Your Heart a Break”

Qualified to the run-off vote:
Klaudy – “För dig”
Gunilla Persson – “I Won’t Shake (La La Gunilla)”

The qualified songs are not released on the streaming platforms yet. However you can listen to the 2 qualifiers that made it to the run-off vote by clicking on their title of the song.

Denmark

The final took place on 17 February 2024 in Copenhagen. Eight acts participated in a single show, where the winner was determined through two rounds of voting. During the first round, held between February 10 and 16, 2024, and again during the live final on February 17, the top three songs advanced to a superfinal. In the superfinal, a second round of voting determined the ultimate winner. Both rounds relied on a 50/50 combination of public votes and a 20-member jury panel, which was larger than in previous editions. For the first time since 2012, the jury included ten international members from the five most recent winning countries: Sweden, Ukraine, Italy, the Netherlands, and Israel, alongside ten Danish professionals. Viewers had the opportunity to vote for each song once per round using a new version of the mobile application introduced in the 2023 edition or via SMS during the live show. Artists had the choice of performing with a live orchestra accompaniment during their live performances.

In the superfinal, the juries had a clear favourite and that was Saba, receiving a total of 22% out of the 50% possible. However, the danish public disagreed with the jury’s decision and they decided to award their first place to “Johnny” by Basim while Saba was last in their preferences. In the end, it was insufficient for Basim to overtake Saba.

Here you can hear Saba’s song “Sand”:

Lithuania

The live final of the competition was held on February 17, 2024, at the Å vyturys Arena in KlaipÄ—da. Alongside the performances of the competing entries, Monika LinkytÄ— (Lithuania’s 2023 representative), Dons (Latvia’s 2024 representative), and Mango took the stage as interval acts. A hybrid voting system comprising 50% jury votes and 50% public votes determined the selection of three songs for a superfinal. In the superfinal, the winner was chosen through a televoting round.

Here are the results of the first round:

Silvester Belt would’ve ended 2nd with a 50/50 system, where the jury has priority like last year. Luckily, he managed to win the selection with this new format receiving over 14.000 more votes than the 2nd place, Shower.

Here you can listen to “Luktelk” by Silvester Belt:

Iceland

The first semi-final of “Söngvakeppnin 2024” kicked in last Saturday. In this semifinal, 5 acts competed where just two of them advanced to the Grand Final.

The results were as following:

  1. Blankiflúr – “Sjá þig”
  2. CeaseTone – “Ró”
  3. Væb – “Bíómynd” (Qualified)
  4. Sunny “Fiðrildi”
  5. Anita – “Stingum af” (Qualified)

You can listen to the 2 qualifiers by clicking on the title of the songs.

This was everything for this week! See you all with other updates next week!
