As the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 draws closer, the Nordic nations have once again stepped into the spotlight with entries that reflect both tradition and innovation. From experimental electropop to nostalgic folk and introspective rock, Norway, Iceland, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden are ready to leave their mark. Here’s an in-depth look at each country’s entry and what we might expect on the Basel stage.

  1. 🇳🇴 Norway – Kyle Alessandro – “Lighter”

Kyle Alessandro’s “Lighter” is a flamboyant electropop anthem with Norwegian-English lyrics and an over-the-top satirical edge. It pokes fun at digital fame and wealth obsession, making for a polarizing, yet unforgettable act.

Strengths:

  • Visually captivating and unpredictable
  • Strong public support through Melodi Grand Prix
  • A chorus that lingers long after the performance ends

Weaknesses:

  • Risk of being seen as style over substance

Qualification odds: Very high. The strong televote will carry it to the final.

2. 🇮🇸 Iceland – VÆB – “Róa”

A haunting alt-rock ballad, “Róa” focuses on minimalism, emotion, and atmosphere. VÆB sticks to Iceland’s signature melancholic style, drawing comparisons to past entries like Hatari and Systur.

Strengths:

  • Emotional sincerity and mood
  • Strong artistic identity

Weaknesses:

  • Subdued performance could get lost among louder entries
  • Not tailored for mainstream Eurovision appeal

Qualification odds: Low. While artful, it may struggle to rally televoters outside the Nordics.

3. 🇩🇰 Denmark – Sissal – “Hallucination”

With “Hallucination”, Sissal serves up a polished, folk-pop ballad sung in Danish. It’s heartfelt, elegant, and clearly crafted with Eurovision in mind.

Strengths:

  • Poetic lyrics with strong vocal moments
  • Visually rich potential for staging
  • Resonates with fans of classic Scandinavian songwriting

Weaknesses:

  • Lacks the immediate impact of stronger competitors
  • May not stand out in a packed semi-final

Qualification odds: Moderate. A borderline qualifier maybe.

4. 🇫🇮 Finland – Erika Vikman – “Ich Komme”

Finland delivers a bold electro-rock anthem with Erika Vikman’s “Ich Komme” – part disco queen, part rebellious goddess. It’s loud, provocative, and impossible to ignore.

Strengths:

  • Erika’s charisma and fanbase are undeniable
  • A daring, high-energy staging opportunity
  • Guaranteed televote magnet

Weaknesses:

  • Lyrics and title may raise eyebrows
  • Polarizing for juries (in the final) depending on execution

Qualification odds: Very High. With a huge fan following and likely public vote landslide, Finland is a near-lock for the Grand Final.

5. 🇸🇪 Sweden – KAJ – “Bara Bada Bastu”

Sweden brings playfulness and nostalgia in “Bara Bada Bastu” by KAJ – a comedic tribute to sauna culture wrapped in expertly produced pop.

Strengths:

  • Immensely entertaining and fresh
  • Likely to appeal to both juries and televoters
  • Home ground advantage boosts visibility

Weaknesses:

  • Humor may not translate well outside Scandinavia
  • Risk of being seen as a novelty

Qualification odds: Very High. As previous host country and with a fan-favorite act, Sweden will qualify and possibly dominate the televote.

So,

The Nordic entries in 2025 offer one of the most diverse and risk-taking batches in recent memory. While Iceland and Denmark face an uphill battle in qualifying, Norway, Finland and Sweden are poised for success, bolstered by strong fan bases and captivating staging potential.

One thing is clear: the Nordics are playing it safe this year and Eurovision is all the better for it.
