Austria has officially revealed its representative for Eurovision 2025: the talented 23-year-old countertenor JJ. His song, Wasted Love, is set to captivate audiences at this year’s contest in Basel, Switzerland.

Who is JJ?

Born Johannes Pietsch in Vienna, JJ spent much of his childhood in Dubai before returning to Austria in 2016. His rise to fame began in 2021 when he reached the finals of Starmania, a popular Austrian singing competition. Currently, he is pursuing classical music studies at the Music and Arts University of Vienna (MUK) while also performing at the Vienna State Opera.

JJ collaborated with Thomas Turner and Teodora Špirić (also known as Teya, Austria’s Eurovision 2023 representative) to create Wasted Love. The song blends modern pop elements with classical influences, allowing JJ’s distinctive vocal range to shine. Lyrically, it delves into themes of unrequited love and emotional vulnerability, offering an intimate and heartfelt performance.

Austria’s broadcaster ORF conducted a meticulous selection process to find the right song for Eurovision 2025. Austria has a notable history in the Eurovision Song Contest, having won twice. The first victory came in 1966 with Udo Jürgens’ Merci, Chérie, followed by Conchita Wurst’s iconic win in 2014 with Rise Like a Phoenix. With his unique voice and powerful song, JJ hopes to bring another strong result for Austria this year.
