Following the announcement that Burgas will host the 71st Eurovision Song Contest, the city’s local airport has initiated discussions with commercial airlines to increase flight frequencies and introduce new direct routes ahead of May 2027.

Current Connectivity and Expansion Plans

At present, only 23 airports have scheduled connections to Burgas for May 2027, many operating at low frequencies of just one or two flights per week. Currently, the airport is linked to only two major European transit hubs: Frankfurt and Vienna.

  • The Istanbul Connection: The Mayor of Burgas highlighted potential new links to Istanbul Airport, which would instantly open one-stop connections to over 320 destinations worldwide.
  • Scheduling Window: Because the contest takes place during the IATA summer season (late March to late October), airlines are still finalizing their Summer 2027 schedules, leaving ample time to announce charter routes and seasonal adjustments.

“We are actively communicating with airlines about possibilities for additional direct flights to Burgas Airport. As airlines are still in the early planning stages for the next summer season, specific routes cannot be confirmed just yet.”

Capacity and 24/7 Operations

Airport officials expressed strong confidence in handling the estimated 400,000 visitors traveling to the Black Sea coast for the event:

  • Daily Capacity: Up to 50,000 passengers per day and 21 aircraft movements per hour on the airport’s modern runway system—exceeding past host airport records, such as Basel–Mulhouse’s peak of 38,000 daily passengers.
  • Round-the-Clock Service: Operating 24 hours a day with no night flight bans, the airport has the logistical flexibility to accommodate late-night charter and scheduled flights.
  • Special Amenities: Plans are underway for custom Eurovision branding throughout the terminal, alongside dedicated VIP facilities and private arrival channels for competing delegations.
