Another country has just confirmed its participation in next year’s Eurovision, bringing the total number of participants to date to 24. The small Caucasian nation, once considered a powerhouse in the contest during the early 2010s, is set to take another shot at the final of the 64th edition of Europe’s favourite TV show after a two-year streak of non-qualification.

Following a meeting held this Thursday, ICTIMAI TV announced on their Instagram that Azerbaijan will participate in next year’s Eurovision in Switzerland. In this post, they also invited artists interested in representing the nation to submit their songs, in accordance with EBU rules, by September 15th via email.

It is currently unknown whether IctimaiTV will host a national selection or opt for an internal selection, but based on past practice, an internal selection is expected.

According to EurovisionFun, Azeri fans of the contest are advocating for the established Russian-born female singer, ALIZADE, to be chosen through an internal selection as the next Azeri representative. Local media have already sent letters to ICTIMAI TV requesting her selection.

Azerbaijan in Eurovision

Azerbaijan debuted in Eurovision in 2008 and won short time after that in 2011 with “Running Scared” by Ell and Nikki. Azerbaijan achieved notable results between 2009 to 2013 including Safura’s fifth place in 2010 and Farid Mammadov’s second place in 2013. In recent years they managed a single top 10 classification in 2019 with “Truth” by Chigiz. Sadly, the small Caucasian nation is dealing with a two-year non-qualification streak at the moment.
